Engagement Sessions FAQ

When I meet with my brides and grooms-to-be, the topic of engagement pictures almost always comes up. “Can you tell me what they are?” “Do you think that we should we do them?” “What can we do with the pictures?” In this post, I’ll answer these questions and tell you everything you need to know about engagement sessions…

And why I love them!

What are they?

Engagement photos are a celebration of your wedding engagement. What better way to celebrate your love than by having some fun, vibrant pictures taken of the two of you around locations that are special to the two of you?

Should we do one?

Absolutely! Engagement sessions give you the opportunity to work with me before the wedding day. We’ll get to know each other a little better, and I’ve found that this familiarity can help put you at ease on your wedding day. You’ll also get used to being the center of attention. When you’re making out on a busy street while I’m shooting away with my camera, people will stare. It’s no different on your wedding day – from the start of the ceremony to the last dance, all of your friends and family will have their eyes fixed on you.

What should we wear?

When they come to me, most of my brides and grooms don’t have nice, professional pictures of themselves. Engagement sessions to the rescue! You can dress up or dress down as much as you’d like. Formal, casual – they’re your photos, and it’s up to you! Bright, vibrant colors work best – don’t wear white t-shirts or tops! Cool shoes are also highly recommended.

Where should we go?

Some people come to me knowing exactly where they want to go. “We want to go to this bridge, and then under this tree, and then in front of this mural!” For those of you who aren’t as sure, I’ll try to help you figure out what kind of backdrops you like – urban, classic, nature, etc. – and I have no doubt that we’ll be able to find plenty of great locations that match what you want to do.

What can we do with the pictures?

Some people want engagement pictures just to have them, but they can serve a practical purpose, too. You can incorporate them into almost every aspect of your wedding: table numbers, a slideshow, save-the-dates, invitations… I can even create a guestbook for you with your engagement pictures in them!

When should we do them?

Well, you can do them with the blooming flowers in the spring:

…or take advantage of a lazy summer afternoon:

…or capture the changing leaves in the fall:

…or after the first snowfall of the winter!

Have a question I didn’t answer? Email me! I’d love to work with you on engagement pictures and am excited to work with all of my amazing couples in 2010!
